Rental FAQs

About Nomad Rentals

Nomad began with a small number of systems in 2021 and has  steadily expanded to offer reliable, high-performance options for a  range of needs. We focus on the full rental experience, not just price,  with practical details like flexible terms, long pickup hours,  nationwide shipping, and secure handling. We value every customer who  chooses us for their remote work or leisure needs.

How does Starlink Rental Work?

We offer flat rates based on standard rental periods, which are listed on each product page. If you need something outside those durations, we’re happy to provide a custom quote. To book, just send us a message or give us a call and we’ll set up your reservation. Pickup and drop-off are available from our NW Calgary location, or we can ship Mini units anywhere in Canada.

All kits come fully per-configured with an active subscription and Wi-Fi password, so setup is simple. Just assemble the unit and power it on.

Do you have secure payments?

Yes, we used the latest e-commerce technology via our choice of platform 'Square' to ensure your payments and rental deposits are handled securely and reliably. We accept and major credit or debit card and receipts are provided for all transactions. For business customers we GST registered.

What is the difference between the static and In Motion starlink kits?

Gen 2 and Gen 3 roam kits are designed for stationary use. They require 120V power, use a separate router, and are well suited for higher data demands like streaming or multi-user setups at fixed locations.

Mini kits are more compact and can be used both stationary and in motion. They run on 12V power, making them easier to deploy in vehicles, and are a good fit for road trips or operations that need reliable connectivity while moving.

Why do I have to leave a deposit?

Much like any equipment rental service we need to take a deposit to protect ourselves from theft or abuse of equipment. If everything is returned on time and without damage your deposit will be returned within 2 – 5 working days to the original card used for payment. Full rental T&Cs can be viewed here.

What can I use Starlink Roam kits for?

Think of Starlink as comparable to a home or office internet connection. It’s fast enough for streaming, video calls, online gaming, and remote work. We support a wide range of customers, from RV users and travelers to industries like oil and gas, surveying, and film production. For applications that require higher bandwidth and lower latency, such as media work, we can enable high-performance subscriptions for the duration of your rental.

What if I arrive at my destination and Starlink is not working?

We recommend downloading the Starlink app before you leave so you can diagnose any issues. Links: iOS & Android. The placement of the dish is very important, it requires a clear view of the sky with no nearby obstructions like trees or a trailer. The app has a couple of features that can be helpful. First check the statistics menu for up time and any faults. Secondly, we recommend trying the obstacle check function that uses your phone camera if you are still having connection issues.

Why do I need the Starlink app?

Once you connect to the wifi network the starlink system creates, the app allows you to diagnose issues, stow the dish and check of obstructions or network status. You will not be able to modify some system options or the subscription type as each system is linked to our account. You do not need to setup an account to use the tools on the app.

Can you setup a system at our site?

Yes, we can deliver and setup systems at your location. We charge $150 per hour for install & setup labor, and $15.00 + $0.60 per km driven to the setup location.

Are there any data limits or costs on top of the rental price?

No there is no data limit and no costs on top of the rental price. Starlink does have a fair use policy that is applied to all systems, so if you left the system downloading huge files for days and days the speed may be reduced. If you think you will be using the system very heavily, please ask us about adding a small priority data option to your rental. Shipping fees are extra.

What are the Jackery Power units?

Jackery is a reputable US company that builds compact power storage products. We offer the compact 500 & 800 Explorer units as a perfect match to Starlink kits (around 20 - 30 hours of continuous use on one charge) and personal device charging. The included solar panel can be used to continuously recharge the unit.

What is your favorite color?

Blue surprisingly, considering the overall orange theme of the Nomad brand :)
